High above the main door is a clock said to have a dial and hands made from wood\u00a0and a sundial. The clock is <a title=\"Wooden clock\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newcastle.gov.uk\/newcastlecollection\/education\/quayside-heart-of-the-city\/3\/Keelmans%20Hospital\/Fact%20File%20-%20The%20Keelmans%20Hospital%202.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> no longer working.  A notice carved into white stone or plaster on the front of the building reads:<\/p>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">\n<div id=\"attachment_1120\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1120\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1120\" title=\"Keelmen Hospital - Newcastle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle2-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Keelmen Hospital - Newcastle\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle2-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle2-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle2.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keelmen Hospital - Newcastle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the year 1786 the interest of \u00a3100 at 5% forever to be annually distributed on the 23rd day of December amongst the oldest Keelmen resident in this hospital was left by John Simpson Esq. of Bradley, Alderman of this town and forty years governor of the Hoastmens Company.<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"_mcePaste\">The grateful object of his remembrance have caused this stone to be erected so that posterity may know the donor&#8217;s worth and be stimulated to follow an example so benevolent.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div>The <a title=\"hoastmen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.british-history.ac.uk\/report.aspx?compid=43404#s10\" target=\"_blank\">Hoastmen<\/a> is\u00a0one of the <a title=\"Hoastmen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/stream\/northumberlandw02heslgoog\/northumberlandw02heslgoog_djvu.txt\" target=\"_blank\">Incorporated Companies of Newcastle\u00a0Freemen<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>The Company was granted a charter of Incorporation by Queen Elizabeth in 1600.<\/div>\n<div>It was one of the most powerful mercantile corporations of the area. They were concerned with buying and selling coal through the port of Newcastle.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"attachment_1119\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1119\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1119\" title=\"Keelmen Hospital - Newcastle\" src=\"http:\/\/www.civic-time.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/newcastle1-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Keelmen Hospital - Newcastle\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keelmen Hospital - Newcastle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a title=\"Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Keelmen\" target=\"_blank\">Tyneside keelmen<\/a> were employed by the Newcastle Hostmen and were often in dispute with their employers.<\/div>\n<div>In 1699 the keelmen of Newcastle decided to build the Keelmen\u2019s Hospital, a charitable foundation for sick and aged keelmen and their families.<\/div>\n<div>The keelmen agreed to contribute one penny a tide from the wages of each keel\u2019s crew and Newcastle Corporation made land available in Sandgate.<\/div>\n<div>The hospital was completed in 1701 at a cost of \u00a32,000.
