High above the centre of Whitehaven on the west coast of Cumbria is this clock on the former market hall.

Old Market Hall, Whitehaven

Erected in 1880 it was designed by Thomas Lewis Banks.

This building replaced one designed by Robert Smirke who also designed a number of other local buildings. However, is more known the Royal Mint, Tower Hill and the main block and facade of the British Museum.

Currently the building is used as the Tourist Information Centre

Wetheral sundial, Cumbria

Set in the grounds of Wetheral church in north Cumbria is this unique sundial.

The Church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, St. Constantine and St. Mary.

Looking at the stones used to make up this time piece we are not sure if this was it’s original purpose.

Assorted symbols and carvings seem to be made in to the upright pillar.

Mounted high on the tower of St Mary’s Parish Church on the corner of the A596 and Wood Street in Maryport, Cumbria is this clock.

The clock has tan or light brown coloured numbers and is surrounded by what looks like  stone or a flat metal.

Above an entrance to St Bees School on the west coast of Cumbria is this clock.

The school was founded by Edmund Grindel, archbishop of Cantebury in 1583.

This area is known as the foundation quadrangle.

The oldest part of the school is to the left.

The ancient motto above the door on the clock tower translates as ‘ Enter so that you may make progress’.
